Old Enough to Know Better… Young Enough Not to Care! #Dating
We are two South Africans in our early seventies who met through SeniorMatch. Neither of us was looking for someone to rescue us, complete us, or take over our lives. We had both lived long enough to appreciate our independence, and we certainly weren’t looking to complicate our retirement years unnecessarily!
And then we found each other.
How long did we correspond before meeting?
Our connection began with conversations that quickly became much more interesting than the usual online introductions.
Our first telephone conversation lasted an astonishing three hours and thirty-four minutes! We discovered a shared sense of humour, an ability to laugh at ourselves, and a genuine curiosity about each other’s lives.
There was something wonderfully refreshing about being able to talk openly at our age, without pretending to be younger, more successful, or more interesting than we really are.
But we also understood that an enjoyable telephone conversation is not proof of compatibility. We needed to meet in person and discover whether the connection was real.
When did we decide to meet, and where?
After establishing a comfortable connection through our conversations, we agreed to meet in person.
Our first meeting was over coffee, following our initial conversations and the precautions we considered necessary. It was relaxed, informal and without elaborate expectations.
We soon discovered that the man behind the telephone conversations was a musician, an engineer, a practical problem-solver and a rather unconventional romantic.
She, meanwhile, was a retired social worker, fiercely independent, creative, and not easily impressed by romantic promises!
It was perhaps an unlikely combination, but the laughter came naturally.
And the conversations continued.
What happened next?
We began spending time together, sharing everyday experiences rather than trying to create a perfect romantic illusion.
There have been long conversations, music, laughter, road trips, family introductions, a friend's wedding beside the ocean, and some wonderfully ridiculous discussions about the practicalities of growing older together.
One of us plays guitar and sings country songs. The other observes, writes, asks difficult questions, and occasionally challenges the musician’s version of events!
We are discovering the joy of companionship without feeling that we have to surrender our individuality.
We have also had serious conversations about finances, property, family responsibilities, health, personal space, and what a future together might realistically look like.
We have no intention of rushing into marriage. At this stage of our lives, a meaningful relationship does not necessarily require a wedding certificate or a shared bank account.
It requires mutual respect, trust, affection, humour and the freedom to remain ourselves.
We are still getting to know each other, and that is part of the pleasure.
Our advice to other SeniorMatch members
Online dating after seventy can be a wonderful opportunity, but it requires considerably more than a romantic heart and an attractive profile photograph.
Our advice is:
1. Be curious, but remain cautious. Take time to establish that the person you are communicating with is genuine. Verify identities and be alert to inconsistencies.
2. Never confuse attention with trust. Trust is earned through consistent behaviour over time, not through flattering messages or declarations of love.
3. Protect your financial independence. Do not send money to someone you meet online. Discuss financial expectations honestly before making major commitments.
4. Meet safely. Arrange an initial meeting with appropriate
precautions, preferably in a public place, and make sure someone you trust knows your plans.
5. Ask the uncomfortable questions. Health, family obligations, living arrangements, finances, and expectations matter enormously at our age.
6. Don’t ignore your intuition, but don’t let fear make every decision either. Common sense and an open heart can coexist.
7. Keep your sense of humour. At seventy-plus, we all arrive with a little baggage. The trick is finding someone who doesn’t expect you to unpack every suitcase on the first date!
Perhaps our most important discovery is that a successful relationship later in life is not about starting life over. It is about finding someone with whom you can enjoy the life you have already built.
We don’t know exactly where our journey will take us, and we are comfortable with that uncertainty.
We are enjoying the music, the companionship, the laughter, and the unexpected pleasure of discovering each other.
SeniorMatch provided the introduction. The rest is up to us.
And if anyone thinks romance ends at seventy, we can assure them that the musician hasn’t received that memo!
